McDowell Valley Vineyards, Hopland, CA
McDowell Valley, home of the oldest Syrah vines in North America, is the fourth established appellation in California located in the southeast corner of Mendocino County against the Mayacamas Mountains. McDowell Valley is comprised of 424 acres with 222.9 planted and 80 fallow lands and is the home of many award winning wines. The property contains an abundant amount of site improvements, structures, utilities, and farming equipment. McDowell is just an hour and a half north of San Francisco on hwy 101 and five miles east on hwy 175. McDowell Valley Vineyards was established in 1970 and has one of the longest records of contiguous wine production in California. The earliest planted Syrah vines in North America date back to 1919 on the Gibson Ranch in McDowell Valley. There are eleven different varietals planted and one third is dedicated to Rhone Varietals. McDowell has won numerous gold medals for its Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier. The 1999 Reserve Syrah won Best of Show in 2001.
This property is well supplied with 386 acre feet water of both riparian and appropriated with rights to divert, store, and reclaim. With nine 549 propane engines in place near the irrigation ponds, McDowell has a state of the ark transit method to move water throughout the valley.
